Questions About Botox Answered

by | Feb 26, 2013

Botox injections are the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in North America, yet there are still many myths surrounding the product.

What is Botox and How Does It Work?

Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected in to the muscles of the forehead in order to reduce frown lines. It works by obstructing nerve impulses and relaxing the muscle, preventing it from forming wrinkles.

What to Expect

The treatment is minimally invasive as no surgery is required. This makes it unique among cosmetic procedures. Botox sessions only take about ten minutes. Most people don’t require any time afterwards to recover and just go about their day once they leave the office. The discomfort involved is rarely significant. There may be some localized pain, swelling, bruising, or redness. You should see results within the next few days. Over the following month, the injections continue to work and lines should continue to disappear. The results of Botox treatment can last up to four months, though this can vary from person to person.

Not Surgery

We have all seen people who have gone too far with cosmetic surgery and end up with bizarre expressions frozen on their faces. Botox is different because it isn’t surgery and it doesn’t alter your facial appearance in any way. It just reduces the activity of the individual muscles in between the eyebrows, not changing anything else. Facial expressions will also not be affected. You will still look interested when you are interested and surprised when you are surprised. Botox isn’t for everyone, however. If you have certain allergies or pre-existing conditions, Botox treatment is not advised. For more information, consult with your prescribing physician.
